New App and Magazine for Quilters

Hi everybody! It’s been awhile since my last post. I’ve been busy visiting and babysitting my 10 soon to be 11 grandchildren! It’s been a wonderful summer so far. Haven’t got much sewing done though! That’s o.k. though as it’s all waiting for me back in Colorado. I forget how humid it is in Illinois! I have my 45th high school reunion at the end of the month, then head for home.

New Quilting App

When I get back to Colorado,  I left a king size quilt on my frame and am excited to get it quilted. I came across a great new app for my phone and it’s quilt related. It’s called “Free-Motion quilting idea” App. It cost $2.99 but well worth it! It has several different areas to find a design you’d like to quilt! The areas are designs, practice tips and videos.

New Magazine, Modern by the Yard

I found this new app in a brand new free magazine called Modern by the yard #1 The new magazine is sponsored by Benetrex. I really enjoyed seeing the patterns it includes. One of them is for a nice pillow along with quilting ideas. I’m a visual learner so this really helps me get ideas on how to apply my quilting skills.  Do any of you use the snipping tool included with Windows? I find it helpful to take a snapshot of my favorite quilts and add them to a Quilting Ideas folder. I have them on my Dropbox so I can access it on any computers, even my phone! Look for it under your windows key.

I designed my first quilt this summer using EQ7! I’ve had it for such a long time but never used it before. The videos the program included are to help you learn the program and worth reviewing every once in awhile as they are extremely helpful! The quilt I designed was a simple one but I needed to figure out yardage and cutting instructions. The quilt was for my grand daughter Sylvie as she moved into a big bed this summer. I used Minkie for the backing and she loves it! Quilting with Minkie on my longarm was a nightmare but I got through it without to many problems. Here is a picture of the quilt.

That’s all for now. Hopefully I will write again soon. I hope you enjoy the new magazine!

Enjoy every day, as we love to create no matter who likes it or doesn’t, we loved making it for them!

  1. Thanks for this! I started the free motion quilting on my son’s wedding quilt today. Just got 4 blocks done, so a long ways to go, but it’s a start, and the start is what I was procrastinating on! I’m going to make a quilt as you go minke quilt for Chase for her 3rd birthday. I’ve had the kit for a couple years, waiting til now to make it, and I got the backing (minke as well) from MO Quilt Co. I’m not sure about what to bind it with tho. I hate to use a cotton on it, seems like it won’t go, but not sure about binding with minke. What do you think?

    1. If you put a small strip of lightweight interface inside your binding will last much longer. I went with cotton as minkie is so stretchy and hard to manage! Good luck and I can’t wait to see your progress on the quilting. It took me 11 years to get Caralee’s quilt finished, but it did get done!!
